Good Evening Neighbors and Friends,

We had a spectacular meeting this evening with a very large turn out! All of us at ROLOH (Residents of Lake Osborne Heights) would like to Thank our PBSO D14 Team for going over the stats and increase in crime that we have recently experienced. We have proven that residents working with PBSO works and the arrests and crimes that got deterred because of our residents working along with Law Enforcement has proven a vital part. We have several properties that did get hit so we need to stay diligent on watching out for each other.

We would like to thank our COP Members who attended the meeting and we as a neighborhood thank all of you for your volunteer services and being the eyes and ears of PBSO D14 and helping to keep a PBSO presence in our neighborhood. Several of our neighbors are a part of that program and if your interested in joining the COP's let us know and we will place you in contact with Capt. Ruth Feagles. We also thank our own Les Smith which is a LT. in the unit and Helen for being a part of that wonderful program along with all our friends in Murray Hills.

Which brings us to the Neighborhood Watch Program....Our own Helen has been door knocking on Snowden and more than 50 percent of that street wants to participate in this program. Lets work very hard to get Snowden online with that program and then move to the next street. If you want to be the "Champion" and door knock your street to rally the troops here are the requirements. 4 Meetings per year (can be scheduled right before our neighborhood meetings) THATS not a lot and it can be done. With crime up we need our neighbors more than ever to join the Neighborhood Crime Watch Program.

Animal Care & Control gave a fantastic presentation that was informative, surprising and educational. To think the men and women who serve under this county department do as much as they do with all the budget cuts, it really is admirable and remarking. We will be scanning and posting the information to our website at www.roloh.org. A huge thanks from all the neighbors of ROLOH to AC&C for your time tonight and for the alarming statistics on how fast cats breed! WOW! Remember if you want to adopt an animal you can contact them at 233-1200. Along with many of our other animal care and rescue centers. Bullet, who is a beautiful Italian Grey Hound has met his Humans through this adoption program and trust me when I say he is a wonderful loving dog and he came from Animal Care & Control. This proves you can get quality thoroughbred Dogs and Cats at AC&C and other adoption programs. Along with many other animals that just need a Human to love them.

We had announcements for MLK Events by our own Taylor, Set our 1st Annual Picnic for Saturday, March 31st and up coming volunteer events in and around Lake Worth. We saw new faces from new and existing neighbors and hope they enjoyed the meeting! One thing not announced is driving the neighborhood this past weekend, the amount of empty houses are going down drastically and some of the abandon ones are being cleaned up and placed on the market. Also the building on the corner of 12th Ave South and Cochran that is under construction, is a single family home which we are glad to say is with keeping of our single family neighborhood just like we want it.

Oh yea! The election of officers! We as a group re-elected Robert Waples as President, Katie McGiveron as Vice-President, Susan Cioci as Treasurer and Jenny Weed as Secretary. From all of us we are glad to server our neighborhood, fight for our rights and represent Lake Osborne Heights in a positive can do attitude and work for you our residents to try and improve our quality of life right here.

Some participants will need to park on the streets in order to accomodate everyone. We want our neighbors to know ahead of time about his event. We are having a “CONSERVATION EXPO” on Saturday October 2,2010. It will be in the club house of our city golf course located at 1 seventh ave north. It will run from 10:00AM -3:00 PM. There will be vendors displaying many conservation products to help our residents lower their electric and water bills. There will be lots of free gifts and prizes. There is no cost to attend this great event.

Selling a city's soul
Report finds residents' passions about community go beyond economy

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- People like where they live for any number of reasons, but there are several stand-out qualities that ignite residents' passion for their communities -- and how the area is dealing with the recession isn't one of them, according to a report released Tuesday by Gallup and the Knight Foundation.

Residents are most attached to their communities when they have fun places to gather, there's a welcoming atmosphere and there are beautiful and green spaces to enjoy, according to the "Soul of the Community" survey. The study looked at 26 communities and surveyed a random sample of more than 10,000 people earlier this year. Read more about the study at SouloftheCommunity.org.

"While the pain from the recession is deep, other factors far outweigh economics when it comes to determining how emotionally attached people are to their communities," said Warren Wright, managing partner for Gallup, in a news release.
Positive feelings about a community, however, do have a connection to local GDP growth over a longer-term period, according to the report.
The study, in its second year, explores the connection between economic growth and residents' emotional attachment to their communities. Gallup has shown that increasing an employee's emotional connection to his or her company leads to better financial performance of the organization; this study works to see if the emotional connection to a community similarly drives economic growth.

Why people love where they live

The report also is meant to help local leaders and residents identify what people want out of their communities, and how to create desirable environments.

"Have you ever gone somewhere and said 'I could live there?'" said Katherine Loflin, lead consultant on the project, in a phone interview. "It has to do with the welcome-ness, and if it's nice to look at," not "because they're building new business complexes or there are tons of want ads in the paper."
What keeps residents passionate about their communities are some of the things they'd show off to visitors: elements that make for a fun social life, beautiful features, or the historic town square -- things that root people in a community, she said.

The research also found:
A perception that a place is open and welcoming to college graduates is important in order to prevent "brain drain" that can occur when students graduate and leave a place to seek employment.

New residents are the least attached to their communities of any demographic group, even less attached this year than when the survey was conducted in 2008.
Residents more satisfied with their jobs are more likely to have an emotional connection to their community.

Engaged residents
Bradenton, Fla., Grand Forks, N.D., State College, Pa., Long Beach, Calif., and Aberdeen, S.D., had some of the highest percentages of engaged residents, or those who felt highly passionate about where they live. Areas with some of the lowest percentages of engaged residents were found in Gary, Ind., Detroit, Mich., Macon, Ga., Akron, Ohio and Wichita, Kan.
While Detroit was in the bottom five, the city does have some momentum building to change that, especially with growing enthusiasm of residents between the ages of 18 to 34, Loflin said. "People think a certain thing about Detroit and the area," she said. Residents are trying to turn that around. "They're saying we're not done with this community."
In Tallahassee, Fla., social offerings -- having fun places to gather -- were the No. 1 driver of community attachment. There, the Knight Foundation funded the first Tallahassee Film Festival and the Get Gaines Going project, to revitalize a main thoroughfare. Residents of the area are working to create a sense of place, in an effort to get local college graduates to stay and build a career, according to the release.

"A creative and diverse workforce is the key to Tallahassee's future. With guidance from the Soul of the Community study, we can continue to find ways to get there by attracting new talent and keeping our local college graduates in town," said Mike Pate, Knight Foundation's Tallahassee program director, in a news release.
Other communities studied were: Biloxi, Miss.; Boulder, Colo.; Charlotte, N.C.; Columbia, S.C.; Columbus, Ga.; Duluth, Minn.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; Lexington, Ky.; Miami, Fla.; Milledgeville, Ga.; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Palm Beach, Fla.; Philadelphia, Pa.; San Jose, Calif.; and St. Paul, Minn.

2212 Collier we will have volunteers to help with the Clean Out and rehabilitation process for this Senior Citizen that has disabilities from a previous Auto Accident to regain her home and independence. We previously cleaned out the yard and painted the outside of this home and are now returning for the inside work. 2210 Collier we will have volunteers to help this single mother clean up her yard and paint the house Through the Paint Your Heart Out program. We will need Trimmers, Painters, Stucco Work, (Pressure Cleaner before Saturday!!), Yard Work, Etc.

We also would like to Invite all City, County and State Agencies to come and put our minds, ideas and expertise together, work with each other to start addressing a very serious need in our communities regarding Hoarding. Through this communication and the Saturday Events hopefully launch programs and utilize resources to help those who need it.

In case your computer crashes

How to Fix a Crashing Computer

We've come to accept it as a fact of modern life: a computer will eventually crash. PCs crash for a variety of reasons, from faulty drivers to conflicting software, from memory problems to dust clogging up the machine. Try as we might to avoid a crash, sometimes it's just as important to know what to do after the crash occurs.

Crashes come in all shapes and sizes. There's the freeze, of course, where everything just stops. And then there's everyone's favorite, the infamous "Blue Screen of Death," where the screen goes blue and displays all sorts of mysterious instructions. Once you see that, you know you're cooked.

The first and most obvious response to a crash is to restart the computer. If your machine manages to reboot successfully, that's a positive sign. However, the crash may have left behind errors with the PC's registry.

The registry provides directions for every program on a Windows computer, telling your PC what to do next. If there's an error in your registry, your computer might not know what to do. It's probably not a great idea to try fixing the registry on your own. There is software that can do it for you; either search for a free registry cleaner, or we recommend either System Mechanic or PerfectSpeed, both of which include tools to fix a corrupted registry.

If your computer won't restart, your next move is to try restarting it in Safe Mode. Sometimes faulty drivers are the root cause of a crash -- rebooting the computer in Safe Mode disables most of those drivers in the hopes of getting the machine restarted, and perhaps recovering any lost data.

To reboot in Safe Mode, press the F8 key while restarting -- the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, providing choices in the Boot menu. Newer versions of Windows provide several Safe Mode options to choose from -- use the arrow keys (not the mouse) to make a selection, and press Enter.

Bear in mind that when the computer restarts in Safe Mode, it will look, feel and function differently than you're used to -- for example, it will display using fewer colors in a smaller screen resolution, and certain components won't work. In other words, you won't want to use the computer in Safe Mode for very long. Once you've successfully restarted in Safe Mode, work quickly to restore and back up any lost data, make any changes to your system setup and then reboot again normally.

While in Safe Mode, you can attempt to determine the cause of the crash to either disable or uninstall the culprit and avoid future trouble. Windows keeps track of the programs you're using in the Event Viewer -- this is a good place to look for the cause of a crash. Click Start, go to the Control Panel, and click on Administrative Tools. From there, double-click on the Event Viewer and choose the System section. Error symbols will be marked with a red exclamation point, suggesting which program(s) may have caused the crash.

Another guilty party could be the drivers that tell your computer's devices how to operate. To check your drivers for errors, click Start and then Control Panel. Click System and then the Hardware tab. Select the Device Manager to bring up a full list of your drivers; right-click on any one and select Properties. Errors will appear with a yellow "X" or an exclamation point, helping identify the cause of the crash.

If crashes continue to occur, your computer may have problems that require more than a do-it-yourself diagnosis and repair. In that case, we recommend support.com provided by AOL, which provides expert PC repair service remotely, over the phone.

Been the victim of a cyber crime? Don't know how or even who to report it too? Your not alone. Like most victims of cyber crimes it is very difficult to determine where to go or who to go to. The www.ic3.gov site is the place to find out and how to take care of the problem.

All cyber crimes should be reported and this site will determine where it should go to be handled.

Good Evening Roloh Neighbors,

First I want to thank our guest speaker Mayor Jeff Clemens and our PBSO District 14 Team for all their input.

The recent arrests as we do share when information is available is always encouraging and as Mayor Clemens supported PBSO14's report.....Burglaries may be on the rise but the arrests are on the rise as well. Stats are out and crime overall is down by 14% in our city.

As our PBSO team pointed out its you...the concerned citizens that are reporting suspicious behaviour along with thier patrolling that is making a difference. Please keep up the great work, and is great to be recognized by our Sherrif's Department that is our neighbors that is helping to make a difference. Again I appeal to all of you that we need more C.O.P. Volunteers and just email me if your interested.

Mayor Clemens had a lot to cover and it was great to hear some of the positive things that have been accomplished during is term as mayor from Rehabilitation of several parks, to gaining the presence of the Palm Beach Cultrual Council to making changes to our sanitation department to reduce and eliminate cost. Most of all we thank him for is support on the Sunset Property along with all of the commission.

Mayot Clemens also spoke about our city fleet working towards converting to bio diesel fuel, getting approval for a downtown Publix and a solid Beach Plan. He also went over what may transpire with our City Electric Utilities and answered many questions from our ROLOH Team.

It is always a pleasure to have our City and Policing representatives present at our meetings and to address us as neighbors, as a neighborhood and as a part of this great city.

This Buy Local Initiative supports the 350 Project, which is a nationwide effort to support local buying at 3 shops per month and spending $50.00. The 3/50 project is getting a lot of press attention. One way they are doing that is by looking at cities that have lots of registrations.

SUNSET - Single Family Zoning

We have a NEW Commission that supports our Single Family neighborhood. They are willing to rescind the multi-family Land-Use & Zoning Ordinances that were passed by the prior commission, and save us from up to 80 townhouses from being developed at the end of Sunset Drive. This is great news for ROLOH! Your neighbors have been working four long years on your behalf to preserve our way of life.

We need you to take some time out of your busy day to give back to the neighborhood you care about, and attend / speak at the upcoming meetings.
Our commissioners will be voting on this very important issue; they need your support at these meetings.

ROLOH Neighborhood Meeting - July

We had a great turn out :-) Vice Mayor JoAnn Golden went over the increasing millage rate, the water issue with the contracts (All still pending), the Reverse Osmosis Water System and talked about our current electrical contract with FMPA....They are hoping to move away from the Contract and be self managed which would be much more cost effective for the city. She also spoke about the Sunset Property (Smith)....

The city issued a publice Notice earlier this week that they were recinding the original ordinance that rezoned the Smith property to MF20 and it will go back to the county zoning of SF5....This of course has to be voted on during city commission meeting this coming Tuesday and we are asking all the neighbors to please attend and not only thank the commission for thier support but let them know that it is very important to us as a neighborhood to vote yes on this important item.

Crime stats are down for our area but with a word of caution that they are up for home burglaries all over town. PBSO thanked us for being a neighborhood that is looking out for each other and to encourage us to continue what we are doing. :-)

I made announcement that we need more volunteers to join the C.O.P. program to help patrol our neighborhood especially in the Summer Time. I was also appointed to the Lake Worth Planning and Zoning board and look forward to my duties there. Also I'm working on setting up a steering committee and future volunteers for a Community Garden project and if anyone was interested in any of the volunteer programs to let me know.

Larry introduced the new Pastor for LOPC, Omar, very nice guy and we look forward to his participation in our neighborhood.

A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with his hair fashionably combed and shaved perfectly, even though he is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today.
His wife of 70 years recently pass ed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready.
As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on his window.
I love it,' he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just
been presented with a new puppy.
Mr. Jones, you haven't seen the room; just wait.'
'That doesn't have anything to do with it,' he replied.
Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time.
Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is
arranged ... it's how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it.
'It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice;
I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the
parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful
for the ones that do.
Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I'll focus on the new day
and all the happy memories I've stored away.. Just for this time in my life.
Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you've put in..
So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank
account of memories!

I am still depositing.
Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
1. Free your heart from hatred.
2. Free your mind from worries.

ROLOH Crime Prevention Walk

NEXT WALK IN MAY IN THE SUNSET DRIVE AREA!!!! I will send out dates shortly so you can mark you calendars.

I wanted to take the time to personally thank everyone that attended this evenings Crime Prevention Walk in the ROLOH neighborhood.

A HUGE PBSO presence attended including Capt. Silva, LT. John Morrissey, Joel Morganstern - Crime Prevention, Deputy Michael Mahoney - Community Policing, and several other deputies along with:

Mr. BJ Siler and two other members of the C.O.P. (Citizens Observation Patrol) team who will also attend our May 12 ROLOH Meeting. If anyone is interested in signing up for the C.O.P. program this is a great opportunity to increase patrols in our neighborhood.

As Always we send out a special THANKS to Vince, Sylvia and team for showing their support form our sister neighborhood Tropical Ridge. We have had a great partnership with their association and when they plan their next Crime Prevention Walk we need to show our support back.

We were informed that the Code Enforcement Department for Lake Worth is now fully staffed again. Attached below is a copy of their complaint form and also the link to post a complaint online. As we all know we have many empty houses around our area and if we all work together to report over grown yards, unsecured properties, possible unlawful entries to these properties we can help keep our neighborhood safe and clean. When filing a complaint, teaming up with other neighbors, so there are multiple complaints, will help get the job done.
Please remember that there is a process that code enforcement has to go through in order to investigate complaints but we do know that eventually do get get to the complaints and take action.

The worst case is not reporting violations at all which allow properties to become "used car lots", unlawful vehicles that are not tagged or properly registered, trash and litter, etc...

Tropical Ridge Crime Walk

The next Crime Prevention Walk for Tropical Ridge is coming up and we want to encourage EVERYONE that can attend to do so. It will be this coming Saturday, February 7th at 4:00PM

The Tropical Ridge Crime Prevention Walks are very important for us to show our support and to help demonstrate our participation in a city wide effort to reduce crime.

If you can attend we urge and ask that everyone please meet at 825 Wright Drive here in Lake Osborne Heights at 3:30 then car pool to the start of the walk at the Tropical Ridge Location. If you have not been on this walk you really want to do this. If you have a great Car Pool Vehicle please volunteer to be a car pool volunteer.

Family, Friends and Neighbors of ROLOH:

We once again are facing the Challenge that is moving forward in regards to the property located at the end of Sunset in our neighborhood. At the City Council meeting last night it was placed on the agenda with out notice to the public to discuss the future of this property and with no regard as to how this will affect our neighborhood and our way of life in Lake Osborne Heights.

This is expected to come up again at the February 17th City Commission Meeting and regardless of it being on the agenda, we as members of ROLOH and Citizens of the City of Lake Worth need to voice our opinions on this subject.

We are asking everyone, which means everyone that lives in the boarders of our association to attend the February 17th City Commission Meeting and stand up for our rights as citizens to have the vote as to what the zoning and future of that property is, as it will be a direct impact to all of us.

I would like to challenge all our neighbors to speak to your neighbors about this event and encourage thier attendance, your friends in Lake Worth, attendance and everyone you know in this matter.

Having the say in development of our neighborhoods is so important that it is not just about Sunset and ROLOH but every neighborhood in the entire city limits. This agenda could affect the city as a whole and we need everyone's support to keep our decisions just that....Our Decisions.

Let me start off by saying how much I enjoyed attending your meeting Tuesday night. You are a committed group of residents who obviously care about your neighborhood. As I said at the meeting, I truly applaud that. Lt. Baer, Deputy Moral and Deputy Mahoney all echo my sentiments. We truly appreciate your group’s response.

That said, let me give you some good news:

In addition to the burglary apprehension that PBSO made a few blocks from your neighborhood on Tuesday (the one I spoke about at the meeting, where the young man staying home from school saw a burglar enter his home wearing gloves), a member of my squad made an outstanding apprehension in the Lakeview area on Wednesday. I assigned Deputy Ed Guzman to an unmarked vehicle to patrol the Lake Osborne area. Deputy Guzman caught three individuals – two of them juveniles – as they left the scene of a residential burglary on High Ridge Road and were headed for your neighborhood. The burglary had not been discovered by the owner yet and Deputy Guzman did a superb job of building the criminal case against all three suspects.

My squad also responded to a burglary today in the 1900 block of Moor Drive today. However, it was an issue between roommates and we are still investigating to determine if it is a civil or criminal matter. I wanted to let you know about this because your neighbors may have observed many PBSO deputies responding to this call.

Once again, we truly appreciate your group’s commitment to making for a better Lake Worth. As I said at the meeting, I pledge our continued efforts in your neighborhood. As a matter of fact, Deputy Mahoney was patrolling your neighborhood on his bike just today.

Finally, please reiterate my exhortations to your members to call us whenever they observe something suspicious or out of place in the neighborhood.

Residents of Lake Osborne Heights, Inc. (ROLOH) is a voluntary association of neighborhood residents. The community consists of attractive homes in a quiet, low-traffic area along the shores of Lake Osborne, west of I-95. ROLOH exists to maintain and improve the quality of life in this neighborhood through dissemination of information, providing meetings as forums for discussion, and representing the members’ viewpoints to the City.

Membership is open to all resident homeowners and renters within the area bounded by the center of Twelfth Avenue South (on the south side), Lake Osborne Drive (on the west side), Interstate 95 (on the east side), and the most eastern point of Lake Osborne (on the north side) but not including residents of Murray Hills, Lakeside Point Gardens, and Parkview estates, or the Sixth Avenue trailer park.

Meetings are generally held on Mondays, every other month at 7:00pm in the facilities of Lake Osborne Presbyterian Church, located at the corner at Sixth Avenue South and Sunset Drive. The meetings include such topics as crime prevention, storm preparedness, zoning changes, and upcoming city-wide events. ROLOH also sponsors neighborhood events such as covered dish dinners, community yard sales, and holiday activities.

Book Sale - The Friends of Lake Worth Library

The Friends of the Lake Worth Library will be holding a used book sale on Saturday, January 31st from 9:00 am to 3:00 p.m. at the Cultural Plaza (414 Lake Avenue) across the street from the library.

Also if there is enough generated we can use the funds for other projects that will benefit the whole neighborhood (TBD).

Sign of the Times and a Time to Step Up

Residents of ROLOH please read the below quotes from emails received by ROLOH:

"Not sure if you know this already but the Neubarth home was robbed yesterday afternoon. Mr Neubarth interrupted a home burglary, he came home and found 2 Hispanic males in a tan SUV removing TV's etc from the home. Mr. Neubarth parked his truck in the driveway and blocked the men in, the two men held him down, stole his wallet and keys, moved his truck out of the way and got away. He just had a stroke 3 mos ago and was taking to the hospital for observation. The police got fingerprints from the truck and the scene. That's all I know so far."

and

"On December 3rd "last week", when I arrived home from work around 5:30 pm, I noticed my dead bolt lock on my front door was severely damaged to the point where I could not enter my home through the front door. My next door neighbor assisted me in removing the damaged lock and replacing it the same evening. Whoever it was trying to get into my home was somehow spooked and fortunately did not get access to my home.
That same evening, (December 3rd 2008) from 6:30 until nearly past midnight, I sat outside with my neighbor, and we did a mini-experiment to see how often the police drove down our street "Wright drive", and in a 6 1/2 hour period...NOT ONE SINGLE GIVEN TIME, DID WE SEE A POLICE CAR AND EMERGENCY VEHICLE, OR ANY OF THE SORT DRIVE PAST OUR HOME. "

These are two very disturbing accounts that ROLOH feels represents what is to come in these very tough economic times and the Holiday Season. I personally feel very strongly that we need to have the C.O.P. (Citizens On Patrol) program and other crime prevention programs in our Neighborhood and with the two above quotes I want to appeal to all of ROLOH that this is a time to Step Up and make security and crime prevention a key issue for our wonderful area.

I do have applications for the C.O.P. program and if you would like one I would be more than happy to drop them off or you can pick them up at my home. I fully pledge to step up my efforts to get as much information from our District 14 Captain about the available programs that we can use and bring as much information I can to our Neighborhood.

Right not the most needed is for Retired and Working class members of ROLOH to join the C.O.P. program so that we have a balanced members group that can provide daily and evening patrols through out our streets.

Secondly I urge that we start doing a Monthly Crime prevention walk through our streets I will start planning the next one right way and as soon as possible, this comes with the blessing of our ROLOH team and if anyone wants to volunteer to help with organizing the walk and/or C.O.P. recruitment I would greatly appreciate it.

Thirdly I know the whole ROLOH team feels that we as neighbors need to band together and assure each and everyone of our neighbors that we are all watching. Please check on your elderly neighbors often and make a point to wave and say hello to each and everyone of your neighbors as you pass them by. This will help to establish a better communication through out the neighborhood and to embrace our unity.

Most importantly please know that our Sheriffs department is here to help us so please do not ever be hesitant to make the call. For the non-emergency calls please dial....561-688-3000 and as always for emergencies please dial 911.

As residents of ROLOH we are the eyes and ears of the whole neighborhood and with our input, our local District 14 Sheriffs department can better serve and protect us.

LAKE WORTH — The city's leaky shuffleboard building will get a new roof and other repairs, city commissioners decided Tuesday. The building west of city hall on Lucerne Avenue is used for shuffleboard and the Lake Worth Resource Center, a day-labor center for workers.

Commissioners voted 4-1, with Commissioner Retha Lowe dissenting, to spend up to $140,000 on the repairs. The original proposal, supported by Commissioner Cara Jennings, was to spend up to $300,000 to repair the roof and window frames and to improve entrances and bathrooms to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

"We can fix the building or let it be condemned," Jennings said. But Mayor Jeff Clemens and other commissioners had concerns about spending money on an old building that has long been discussed as a location for a future city hall or library. "It has been identified as the linchpin property for the redevelopment of the west side of our downtown," Clemens said. The $140,000 compromise will include replacing the roof and other repairs but not replacement of the window frames and other items deemed non-essential.

Also Tuesday, city commissioners agreed to spend up to $1,850 to secure gas lines to the water heater and make other repairs at the city pool, which was rebuilt earlier this year by the Greater Bay Group, the company the city tapped in 2006 to rebuild the beachfront casino. Public Services Director Joseph Kroll recommended making the repairs so the pool could be heated and used. The city will try to recover costs for the repairs from Greater Bay.

Our visibility helps decrease crime in this area. Tips for making it through Halloween safely.Stay home with lights on and keep a watchful eye out for your neighbors. Even stay outside on your porch so everyone can see you and you can see everyone. If you see something suspicious PLEASE call the police. It is better to prevent a crime than permit a crime.

And as Vince from Tropical Ridge wrote above it is very important to be seen during this month to let anyone and everyone know that the Residents of Lake Osborne Heights are keeping on eye out for each other and for our neighborhood.

New Splashpark to Open in John Prince Park

Palm Beach County officials will dedicate a new splashpark in John Prince Park in Lake Worth on Saturday, October 11th. The celebration will begin at 9:00 am and continue until 11:00 am.

The brightly colored, 3700 sq foot, interactive water playground is the newest addition to the popular four-acre Boundless playground located on the breezy northern shore of Lake Osborne.

Admission is free and it has a nautical theme with features packed with cool, wet fun for kids of all ages. multiple computerized programs will vary and enhance the interactive enjoyment for area youth.

Features include:

1. A large frog and whale - kids can run through a series of spray arches and stand under a giant splashing tail
2. Rotating spray cannons guaranteed to soak nearby friends
3. A lighthouse with a powerful, rotational, geyser-like water spray
4. A bucket trio with triple the dumping power - kids will have to guess which one will soak them next
5. Ground-level water jets that create a variety of unique spray patterns and effects
6. Shade Sails for sun protection

Man, 47, fatally shot in Lake Worth home invasion robbery
September 28, 2008

A man was fatally shot early Saturday during a home invasion robbery, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said.Douglas James Fernandes Sr., 47, was found dead by deputies about 5:20 a.m. in the 900 block of Small Drive. The three suspects fled on foot, according to the Sheriff's Office.The case was under investigation, and no further information was released. Deputies ask that anyone with information about the shooting call the Sheriff's Office at 561-688-3400 or Crime Stoppers at 800-458-8477.

As Sept 19th is also Evening on the Avenue you will also have the added bonus of lots of public looking and wanting to talk with you about you park. Arrange to share the time with your association members.You must leave your parking space clean at the end of the day.As incentive for you to participate the City Tree Board will give each Neighborhood Association about 25 Oak trees. They must be planted within your neighborhood and will be included in the City's goal of planting 10,000 trees by 2013, our 100 Year Anniversary.They are about 5 feet tall and in very good condition.But only if you sign up by Aug. 29th will you receive the trees.The trees have to be picked up at a central location in Lake Worth.We will let you know where and when the trees can be picked up, probably around Sept 19th.You must provide your own vehicles to deliver the trees to your neighborhood.Each association may have a mini tree give-away or how ever you want to distribute the trees fairly among your neighbors.Let me and Donna know as soon as possible that you will be participating or if you have questions. When an adult has a sudden cardiac arrest, his or her survival depends greatly on immediately getting CPR from someone nearby. Unfortunately, less than 1/3 of those people who experience a cardiac arrest at home, work or in a public location get that help. Most bystanders are worried that they might do something wrong or make things worse. That’s why the AHA has simplified things.

Two steps to save a life.
When an adult suddenly collapses, trained or untrained bystanders – that means a person near the victim – should:1) Call 911 2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest.
Studies of real emergencies that have occurred in homes, at work or in public locations, show that these two steps, called Hands-Only CPR, can be as effective as conventional CPR. Providing Hands-Only CPR to an adult who has collapsed from a sudden cardiac arrest can more than double that person’s chance of survival.

Don’t be afraid. Your actions can only help.

ROLOH is proud to announce our 1st of many Crime Walks for Lake Osborne Heights. On Thursday, August 7th at 7pm we will meet on the corner of 12th Ave South and Cochran Ave.
The Lakeside United Methodist Church as graciously agreed to let us park up to 10 cars in the back lot next to the railroad tracks right where we need to start our walk so for those driving over, please car pool as much as possible.

***I spoke with Mayor Jeff Clemens this afternoon and he has committed to walking with us and I will be following up with our City District - Vice Mayor Retha Lowe to confirm if she can make it as well. SO GET THE BUZZ OUT***

This first walk will be north on Cochran then cut over to Wright Drive moving South back towards our starting point and should last about 30 minutes. Please spread the word to all your neighbors! I went door to door today on Wright Drive to spread the news and received a good response.

I will send a bulletin out to Jennifer in the next day or so that will be sent out on the email format and I know we all look forward to this very exciting event.

Don't Forget the National Crime Night Out on Tuesday August 5th which will be held at the shuffle board courts in Lake Worth from 5:00pm to 7:30pm.

Update on the Wright Drive petition for a Traffic Study - I have obtained 13 signature so far and was told that there is another resident on the other side of 6th on Wright Drive taking signatures as well. Laura is the name of that person and she called me today and she and I are very excited about combining resources to get the signatures we need to move the Wright Drive project forward. Scammers Use e-Mail, Fax to Pose as IRS

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service cautions taxpayers to be on the lookout for a new wave of scams using the IRS name in identity theft e-mails, or phishing, that have circulated during the last two months.
In May and June alone, taxpayers reported almost 700 separate phishing incidents to the IRS. In 2008 so far, taxpayers have reported about 1,600 phishing incidents to the IRS.
“Taxpayers should take steps to keep their personal information out of the hands of identity thieves,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “That includes not falling for any of the phony e-mails or faxes now in circulation pretending to come from the IRS.”
The most common scams involve tax refunds and, this year, economic stimulus payments.
Although most of these scams consist of e-mails requesting detailed personal information, the IRS generally does not send e-mails to taxpayers, does not discuss tax account matters with taxpayers in e-mails, and does not request security-related personal information, such as PIN numbers, from taxpayers.
Refund e-Mail Scam
There are several variations of the refund scam, in which an e-mail claiming to come from the IRS falsely informs the recipient that he or she is eligible for a tax refund for a specific amount. The bogus e-mail instructs the recipient to click on a link to access a refund claim form. The form requests personal information that the scammers can use to access the e-mail recipient’s bank or credit card account.
This notification is phony. The IRS does not send unsolicited e-mail about tax account matters to taxpayers.
Filing a tax return is the only way to apply for a tax refund; there is no separate application form. Taxpayers who wish to find out if they are due a refund from their last annual tax return filing may use the “Where’s My Refund?” interactive application on the IRS Web site at IRS.gov, the only official IRS Web site.
Economic Stimulus Payments Scam
In this scam, a taxpayer receives an e-mail pretending to come from the IRS which tells the recipient he or she is eligible for an economic stimulus payment. The message recommends direct deposit into the taxpayer’s checking or savings account. To receive the payment, recipients must click on a link to complete and submit an online form by a certain date; otherwise, the e-mail warns, payment may be delayed. The form requests personal and financial data, including checking or savings account numbers that the scammers can use to gain access to the accounts.
In reality, the way members of the public receive their economic stimulus payment is to file a tax return with the IRS, not a special form. Additionally, the IRS does not request personal or financial information via e-mail.
Information on how to obtain an economic stimulus payment may be found in the Economic Stimulus Payment Information Center on the IRS Web site (http://www.irs.gov/). For more information on stimulus-related scams, see IR-2008-11.
Substitute Form 1040 Fax Scam
This scam consists of a cover letter and form that are faxed, rather than e-mailed. The cover letter is addressed “Dear Valued Tax Payer (sic)” and appears to be signed by an IRS employee. The letter says that the IRS is updating its files and that recipients who supply the requested information will receive a nominal tax refund. It also states that those who fail to immediately return the completed form risk additional tax and withholding. The attached form is labeled a substitute Form 1040 and is titled “Certificate of Current Status of Beneficial Owner For United States Tax Recertification & Withholding.” It requests a large amount of detailed personal and financial information, such as mother’s maiden name (often used in security screening), bank account numbers, estimated assets and more. It asks the recipient to sign and fax back the completed form, as well as a copy of the recipient’s driver’s license and passport.
The letter, signature and form are all fraudulent. Moreover, the IRS does not send unsolicited faxes to taxpayers and does not request such detailed personal and financial information. This is a variant of earlier scams. For more information, see news releases IR-2004-104 and IR-2004-75.
Company Report Scam
This e-mail appears to come from an IRS.gov e-mail address, addresses recipients by name and references the company the recipient works for. These personalized details may convince the recipient that the e-mail is legitimate. The e-mail says that the IRS has a report on the company and asks the recipient to review a copy by clicking on a link to download the report. However, when the link is clicked, malware is downloaded to the recipient’s computer.
There are various types of malware, which can hijack a victim’s computer hard drive to give someone remote access to the computer, search for passwords and other information and send them to the scammer, or cause other types of identity theft or damage.
The IRS does not compile reports on companies or send e-mails to company staff asking them to review a report. Generally, the IRS does not send unsolicited e-mails to taxpayers.
Tax Court Scam
In this scam, an e-mail that appears to come from the U.S. Tax Court contains a petition involving a court case between the IRS and the recipient. The document instructs the recipient to download other files. The downloads transfer malware, or malicious code, to the recipient’s computer.
There are various types of malware, which, for example, can hijack a victim’s computer hard drive to give someone remote access to the computer, or can search for passwords and other information and send them to the scammer.
The truth is that the Tax Court is not e-mailing notices to anyone who currently has a case before the court. Visit the court’s Web site at http://www.ustaxcourt.gov/ for more information. Recipients are advised to avoid clicking on any links in the e-mail and to delete the e-mail.
How Scams Work
To lure their victims, phishing scams use the name of a known institution, such as the IRS, to either offer a reward for taking a simple action, such as providing information, or threaten or imply an unpleasant consequence, such as losing a refund, for failing to take the requested action. The goal of the scams is to trick people into revealing personal and financial information, such as Social Security, bank account or credit card numbers, which the scammers can use to commit identity theft.
Typically, identity thieves use a victim’s personal and financial data to empty the victim’s financial accounts, run up charges on the victim’s existing credit cards, apply for new loans, credit cards, services or benefits in the victim’s name, file fraudulent tax returns or even commit crimes. Most of these fraudulent activities can be committed electronically from a remote location, including overseas. Committing these activities in cyberspace allows scammers to act quickly and cover their tracks before the victim becomes aware of the theft.
People whose identities have been stolen can spend months or years — and their hard-earned money — cleaning up the mess thieves have made of their reputations and credit records. In the meantime, victims may lose job opportunities or may be refused loans, education, housing or cars.
What to Do
Anyone wishing to access the IRS Web site should type http://www.irs.gov/ into their Internet address window, rather than clicking on a link in an e-mail or opening an attachment, either of which may download malicious code or send the recipient to a phony Web site.
Those who have received a questionable e-mail claiming to come from the IRS may forward it to the following address: http://us.mc303.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=phishing@irs.gov. Use the instructions contained in an article on IRS.gov titled “How to Protect Yourself from Suspicious E-Mails or Phishing Schemes.” Following the instructions will help the IRS track the suspicious e-mail to its origins and shut down the scam. Find the article by visiting IRS.gov and entering the words “suspicious e-mails” into the search box in the upper right corner of the front page.
Those who have received a questionable telephone call that claims to come from the IRS may also use the http://us.mc303.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=phishing@irs.gov mailbox to notify the IRS.
The IRS has issued previous warnings on scams that use the IRS name to lend the scam legitimacy. As recent developments prove, Lake Worth is a city that is on the move. The CRA is committed to smart growth, a concept that ensures the board acts with input from citizens, local leaders and the business community. This is the basis for our commitment to the citizen-friendly master plan process, which we believe will give Lake Worth a roadmap for future development and conservation.

The volunteer citizen CRA Board of Commisioners holds meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month in the City Commission chambers. The purpose of this Web site is to provide you with information to help you understand what we do and why we do it.
